Features and benefits of 24 Ruddy Turnstone. Why rent this house?

We have visited Hilton Head Island every year since 1974 and have seen it grow from a sleepy little barrier island to the Low Country's premier resort destination with all the activities and amenities any vacationer could possibly need or want. When we decided to buy a home here we had years of experience and knowledge to guide us in picking the right vacation house in the right place ... so our family, too, could enjoy all the Island has to offer. Nora has been a Real Estate Broker for many years. We knew just where we wanted to be ... but it took us over 25 years to be able to make it happen!

Sea Pines

The first and largest Plantation on Hilton Head Island was the dream of developer Charles Fraser in the late 1950's. He envisioned a development in which the primary focus would be the "harmony of nature and man". Great care was taken in the layout and design of the golf courses and streets to maintain and enhance the Island's flora and fauna. Our beautiful beach was protected as were the stately oaks dripping with Spanish moss.

The Beach

Hilton Head Island is shaped like a foot, with sandy beaches extending from the heel (Port Royal) to the toe (Sea Pines' South Beach). The beach is slowly eroding only at those end points and one stretch of the sandy beach is actually getting wider; this most gently inclined section is between the Sea Pines Ocean Gate and the Sea Pines Beach Club! This area, which includes the Ruddy Turnstone beach, not only has the widest sandy beach in Sea Pines but also the gentlest waves and most gradually sloped entry into the water. It's a wonderful, safe beach for children, yet provides the offshore depths necessary for enjoyable ocean sports. Additionally, the entire Hilton Head beach is artificially replenished as needed to make sure that the wide, sloping stretch of sand always remains suitable for sunbathing, walking and biking.

4th Row

When you rent a house on Hilton Head Island you basically have three choices: On the beach side, fronting on a golf course or located in a forested area. "Minutes to the beach" won't mean much when you're lugging a beach umbrella, picnic food and drinks, towels, etc. to the ocean. The closer you are to the water the more easily you can enjoy our beautiful Atlantic Ocean beach.

Unfortunately most oceanfront homes in Sea Pines Plantation sell for between $5,000,000 and $7,950,000 and they rent expensively, too. If you can afford it, by all means enjoy one! As of January, 2006 there are 38 beachside homes for sale in Sea Pines. The least expensive of these "ocean-oriented" homes is listed for sale at $1,500,000, and then two more at just under $1,900,000. Most of these less expensive homes were built on the undesirable ground-level during the Sixties and are now ready to be "recycled". In 2005 a "tear-down" on the 3rd row of our street sold for $1,600,000. It was immediately demolished and the new home under construction was sold for $3.2 million.

"Ocean-oriented" refers to the first 6 to 8 rows of homes from the beach. Most ocean-oriented homes in Sea Pines and Palmetto Dunes sell for $1.4 to $3.5 million with ranges to almost eight million dollars. Rent as close to the ocean as you can afford. It will be well worth it!

The House

We recently bought this home and thoroughly remodeled the inside as well as completely re-surfacing our private, lighted pool with a Diamond-Brite finish. We took great care in furnishing your vacation getaway in a thoughtful and comfortable manner. You'll note that it is raised up off the ground, as are all the newer homes on the Island, to protect it from storms and to discourage vermin from entering.

Do you know how big your water heater is at home? We've installed a new 80 gallon water heater for your comfort. Your whole family can come back from the beach at the same time, get into the three showers or bathtubs at the same time, start up the washing machine and still not have to worry about running out of hot water. Enjoy! Most three bedroom houses have only fifty or sixty gallon tanks. Ask before you rent.

We are on the public sewer system (not a septic tank). It cost almost $15,000 but assures you that a lot of water use will not ruin your visit. Make sure that the house you rent does not have a in-yard cesspool.

In the kitchen we've installed a "Tide Clock" so you can always see if it's low or high tide and whether it's ebbing or flowing. Of course you can also look at the tide tables here on our web site.

Don't you just hate having to wake up early in the morning while on vacation because of flimsy curtains in your bedroom? Improperly designed window treatments can keep you from enjoying that afternoon siesta in our bright Island sunshine. We've installed room-darkening cordless shades on the master bedroom windows. You want your room dark in the morning so you can lie lazily late in bed? No problem. The master bedroom is also completely soundproofed so that you won't hear the TV in the living room and those in the living room won't hear you. Enjoy!

Your telephone system doubles as a telephone answering machine. You will be given the PIN to your personal voice mailbox and long-distance carrier when you arrive. No missed phone calls to your private number! AOL, Compuserve, Earthlink and Wal-Mart Connect all have local access numbers on the Island. You won't incur long-distance phone charges while you surf the internet. But better yet; use our broadband wireless connection! It's open ... no password needed.

The home has wonderful central air-conditioning (two zones). There are 3 ceiling fans on the expansive porch as well as a genuine palm-frond ceiling fan in the master bedroom. Enjoy the cooling breezes. The kitchen is well-equipped with a professional blender, drip coffee maker, bagel toaster, electric range, dishwasher, microwave, convection oven and refrigerator with ice-maker. The laundry room provides an iron and ironing board as well as a new full-size washer and dryer. Of course you'll find freshly laundered linens placed on your five beds (1 king, 2 doubles and 2 twins) as well as fluffy towels to greet you. The cleaning service will have finished freshening your island beach home just prior to your arrival!

TV, Cable & Stereo

We've installed a Big Screen 57" HDTV in the living room. It's hooked up to 65 cable channels so you'll always find something entertaining to watch. Additionally we've installed a progessive scan DVD player, VCR and stereo with CD player for your pleasure. Your kids will enjoy the Sony Playstation II with two hand-held controllers. You can bring your own games or rent them from the local Blockbuster or Hollywood Video. Every bedroom has a television set as well as a VCR. You'll never have to fight with the kids for the remote control. Naturally all five TV's (including the one in the breakfast room) are hooked up to Island cable.

Humidity & Freshness

Before you rent make sure that your chosen home is mold-free. I'm allergic to mold so this was an extremely important factor in our buying decision. In fact, we've had all the ductwork professionally cleaned to keep things comfortable and fresh year 'round. Never rent an Island home without checking out its freshness factor first!

Heated Swimming Pool

During the summer you certainly won't need to heat the pool (and the ocean temperature will be 75-84 degrees Fo). In the Spring and the Fall the pool water could be cool so there is a gas-fired heater for your pool. Be sure to ask that it be switched on and heated up prior to your arrival. It will raise the pool temperature into the mid eighties. (Additional charge for actual fuel used.) During the summer months your pool is professionally cleaned and serviced every Tuesday and again on Saturday morning before your arrival on the Island. During the cooler months only Saturday cleanings are required.

Enjoy a Barbeque out on the pool deck or relax on the newly reburbished 900 square foot screened-in porch overlooking the swimming pool while the three whirling ceiling fans cool you off as you relax and drink frozen Margaritas made in your professional restaurant-grade blender. Watch the kids splash and play in your private pool as you sit back in your newly refinished Tropitone chairs and lounges. Relax and enjoy your well-earned vacation.

Doing Business

Yes, we know you're on vacation ... but we also know that work never stops. In the alcove of the breakfast room you will find a Lexmark X125 fax machine, scanner, copier and color printer for your use. It's right next to a telephone jack so that you can send or receive faxes or make copies (even without a computer). You can get any necessary Windows® drivers for the printer by following the links here. We have left a USB connector plugged into the X125 printer/fax so that you can easily connect it to your laptop. New ink cartridges were just installed at the end of 2005.

Use your laptop to get on the Internet from any room in the house, the pool or the deck. We have provided broadband wireless internet access for you at no additional charge.

Local Property Management Company

We have hired Destination Vacation to support you while renting here on Hilton Head Island. You will receive your personal keycode and Sea Pines gate passes in the mail a week before your arrival. The Key Entry system is a wonderful feature from Destination Vacation. Your unique entry code assures that "Everyone" in your group gets a 'key' which can't possibly be lost in the sand and assures you that last week's renter won't be back to visit your house again this week while you're all sunning down at the beach.

If you should ever have any concerns or questions, Destination Vacation will be very happy to assist you. They provide an excellent maintenance staff to make sure everything in your vacation home always works the way that it should. They are there to make sure that you enjoy every minute of your Hilton Head Island vacation! Just press the "Destination Vacation" speed-dial button on your kitchen telephone to reach them.

Security Features

The Sea Pines Security personnel are not "rent-a-cops" from a security company. They are actually Beaufort County Sheriff's Deputies. (Notice the blue lights on the security patrol vehicles.) Additionally your access to the house is provided by an electronic coded key-entry pad. This assures you that last week's repairman doesn't have a spare key to your vacation home! You also won't have to worry about bringing your keys to the beach and losing them in the sand.
